Home energy costs are of concern to everyone who has to pay the bills that light, heat, cool, entertain and run our homes. Out of control much? But what can you do about lowering your energy use? Well, a few things as it happens.

Our lives are dominated by technology and invention. Smart technology, applications and even transportation have a huge influence on our lives. They also give us the chance to live way more efficiently when compared to 20-30 years ago. But what about the home energy costs?

The problem with all this efficiency is that it hasn’t necessarily translated into the way we run our homes. If you are paying much bigger energy bills than you’re happy with, then you need to make some changes to your lifestyle. And it actually isn’t that hard.

Lower your home energy costs with some simple advice.

Turn your Thermostat Down

You may think that you don’t want your home to be cold and this is completely normal. The main problem that a lot of people have is that they aren’t actually cold, they are just used to the temperature of your home.

If you want to save money on your thermostat or the heating of your home in general then try and turn it down by one degree every week. If you are able to turn your thermostat down by three or even five degrees then this can reduce the cost of heating your home by a significant amount.

In fact, you could save 10-15% off your total bill and this is a saving that is just too big to pass up. You won’t even feel the effects of it being turned down if you do this over time and this is a great way for you to really save without having to put a ton of work in.

Start a Compost Pile

If you have a garden then you’ll know how annoying it can be to run out and get fertiliser all the time. If you want to save money on your garden then consider starting a compost pile.

You really don’t need to have a lot of space in your yard to have one and you will also be doing your part for the environment as well.

Compost is any organic waste that is able to decompose over time, so think about potato peel, banana skins, apple cores and more.

If you are able to recycle your own waste then this will not only help your garden bills, but it will also limit the amount of rubbish you produce on a daily basis and this is ideal for anyone who wants to make a difference to the world.

It’s All About the Low Flow

Low-flow showerheads really do improve the energy efficiency of your home and when you have this improved, you can easily save money on your water bills. Low-flow is considered to be anything below 2 and a half gallons a minute. You probably don’t know this but normal showerheads go through 5 gallons a minute.

If you have a family of 5 living with you then you will know how much this could save you and this is especially the case if you have kids who like to take super long showers.

Combine this with the thermostat tip from above and there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be able to save a ton of money.

Seal All Windows

It helps to check your windows from time to time. You could be having massive gusts of wind coming through one of your bedroom windows and not even know about it.

This is especially the case in the guest bedroom where you may not have any idea of the normal temperature of the room.

You need to go around your windows and check for any air leaks. If you do have some leaks then consider having some weather-stripping installed. When you do this, you can easily stop that cold air from coming through and your home will be much warmer as a result.

On top of this, your heating won’t be working overtime either. If you have cracks in the drywall, go over it in caulk as this can also save you a ton of money. The best thing about this is that you can easily do it all yourself!

Don’t Use Space Heaters

If you have a space heater then you’ll save a heap on your home energy costs by not using it. Sure, it can help to keep your feet nice and toasty and this is especially the case in winter but did you know that there are way more efficient ways for you to heat your home?

Space heaters can use up over 1,500 watts energy single time you turn them on. The first thing that you need to try and do is find out why the room you are in is so cold. You then need to try and work out what you can do to put an end to the underlying problem.

Have double glazing installed or add extra insulation installed to ouor ceiling and walls. This may be expensive to begin with but it can save you thousands in the future. A good blanket never really goes amiss either!

Water- If you’re Not Using it- Turn It off!

The average homeowner can save hundreds every single year if they just watch their water usage. When you shave or when you brush your teeth, turn the water off.

When you have a bath, you use on average 75 gallons of water but when you have a shower, you use 17 gallons. When you do your washing, try and avoid doing half-loads in the washer.

If you have more clothes to wash then wait until you have enough to do one full load. This will save you time when it comes to drying them all and it can also save you a lot of time and effort as well so you know that you won’t have any problems there.

Replace Incandescent Bulbs

In the year 2014, a lot of manufacturers stopped producing both 40 watt and 60 watt incandescent bulbs. The truth is that this doesn’t mean that we are doomed to live in the dark constantly.

LEDs give a way longer lasting light, are much more energy efficient and will save your home energy costs. The average home has over 40 bulbs so if you are able to cut down on the amount of energy that you use in your home then this is a great way for you to really save on your electrical bill.

Unplug Unused Chargers

Cell phones that are plugged in are energy vampires. If you have a phone charger plugged in that is not charging up a phone then you are still using energy. Your phone charger will use around 2.25 watts of energy when it is in use and when it is not in use it will use around 0.25 watts.

One charger won’t make an impact here but if you have a lot of phone chargers around your home or if your entire family have phones then this can really make a difference to your energy bill. The solution here is simple, all you have to do is unplug your phone when it is not in use.

Replace your Glass

If you purchased a fairly old house when you made your property investment then there is a high chance that the glass that you have is not double glazing. If you have broken glass then this can also make a huge impact on your energy bills as well.

If you want to try and stop all of this then one thing that you can do is try and replace the glass you have with a much thicker alternative. One way for you to do this would be for you to look into professional glass because things have changed a lot in the last couple of years and now glass is way better when compared to how it used to be.

If you are able to find out what is costing you the most energy then you’ll soon find that the whole thing really does pay for itself and this is an incredible way for you to save money around the home.
