If your home has not received any TLC for a few years now, it is likely that it has become a bit dated.
There are some styles and trends that have achieved that elusive timeless status, meaning they will never go out of fashion, and these are the sorts of things you can have in your home for year and years to come.
But how do you distinguish these items from those that are making your home look and feel old and tired?
To get to the bottom of the problem, read on to discover some of the things that could be making your home feel dated.
Vinyl flooring –
Let’s begin with your flooring. Vinyl and linoleum may have been popular about 20 years ago. However, it can be very difficult to keep this type of flooring clean, and there are lots of styles that simply look cheap and tacky.
Dirty and cheap is never a good look if you want your home to look modern, is it? Instead, wood floors are definitely the way to go. Wood has never gone out of style.
It has achieved that timeless standing that was mentioned in the introduction. Plus, there are so many types of wood to choose from, including classic and exotic types.
Carpeting in the bathroom –
Staying on the subject of flooring, there are so many reasons why carpeting in the bathroom is wrong! Firstly, it looks dated.
After all, that is what this blog post is all about! But, carpet in the bathroom presents further problems than simply looking a bit old fashioned. These issues concern keeping your carpet clean and free of mould – it is a virtually impossible mission.
Instead, for classic and modern look, why not go for bathroom tiles? Like wooden floors, you have so many options to choose from, and so you should have no trouble finding tiles that fit in with your personal taste and the current style of your bathroom.
Tile countertops –
While tiles may look good in the bathroom, they are not the best choice for your kitchen countertops.
They may have been popular in the 1980’s and 90’s, but they certainly aren’t anymore. This is not only because they look dated, but also they are also prone to cracking.
Plus, keeping the grout clean is a difficult job to say the least. Instead, replace your countertops with something modern. The options are endless, yet some good choices include concrete, stainless steel, wood, quartz, granite, and marble.
Old window treatments –
Cracked or dirty blinds can certainly make your home look and feel dated. Roller shades, fringed trim, ties, and heavy fabrics all belong in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s.
To take a step forward into the right decade, invest in light curtains and blinds. You can even go for shutters if you want to add some extra privacy and personality.
Either way, it is important to have a good mix of privacy and light diffusion.
Popcorn ceilings –
Popcorn ceilings have many different names, from textured ceilings to cottage cheese ceilings. No matter what you want to call them, there is one thing they most certainly are, and that is past it!
Instead, you need a ceiling that has clean lines. You have two options available to you. You can cover your existing ceiling with a new layer of drywall or you can remove the popcorn ceiling.
Either way, finish off by applying a couple of coats of paint for a fresh look.
Gone are the days when displaying as many ornaments as possible was the way to go. Get rid of all of those old decorations and knick knacks you have had on display for decades.
Clutter not only makes your home appear dated, but it can make it incredibly difficult to relax in that type of environment. Clutter creates frustration and stress, which are two things you do not need when you get home from a difficult day in the office.
Instead, embrace the minimalistic approach that has become popular over the past few years. You will make your home appear modern and up-to-date if you decorate with a few thoughtful decorations, rather than shoving everything you own into a display cabinet.
Why not add some plants to give your home a fresh and airy feel?
Gold or brass light fixtures –
If you have gold light fixtures or shiny brass fixtures, now is time for an update. Your lights and their fixtures play a much bigger role in the look and feel of your home than you may realise.
They can dictate the entire mood and feel. So, upgrade your brass or gold fixtures with a modern style instead.
Luckily, you have so many options to choose from, with classic, industrial, and contemporary looks available in homeware stores today. From graphite to bronze, you aren’t limited in terms of colour selection either.
Old borders and wallpaper –
Last but not least, we have old wallpaper and borders. This simply had to make the list! Nothing makes your home age quicker than busy patterns, be it chickens hatching out of eggs or rowing boats!
You don’t have to ditch the patterns altogether, though. Instead, go for stripes, bold patterns and faux finishes.
As you can see, there are many different things that could be making your home look and feel dated. If any of the above sounds familiar, it is important to make some changes to freshen up your home, so it looks and feels modern.
